Google’s 2-step Password Verification

I first heard about this a few weeks while listening to the Google’s Atmosphere 2011 Keynotes: 2-step verification. Tonight I accidentally ran into it, and decided to set it all up. As it’s absolute necessity!

2-step verification adds an extra layer of security to your Google Account by requiring you to have access to your phone – as well as your username and password – when you sign in. In addition to your username and password, you’ll enter a code that Google will send you via text or voice message upon signing in.

2-step verification drastically reduces the chances of having the personal information in your Google account stolen by someone else. Why? Because hackers would have to not only get your password and your username, they’d have to get a hold of your phone.

Watch the 3-minute video above, to learn, how you can apply for it too!

Update: right … tried to apply, but not getting the text messages on my mobile. Contacted Google … to be continued!

Update 02Jan12: never received reply from Google (doesn’t come as a surprise), but decided to give it another try .. and it works! I removed the space between “06” and the rest of my cellphone number. That seemed to do the trick!Note: bare in mind that some providers charge you for the sms text, and as such it’s wise to enable the 30-day cookie on your personal computer.

Update 15Jan12: tried to setup Mail App of my Apple iPod with Gmail, and although I’m aware about the application specific passwords, I didn’t know WHERE to fill it in. Read the clear instructions at this Google FAQ.
