Toshiba “no bootable device — please restart system” SOLVED

I’m getting too old for this sh*t.

Toshiba Problem #1

Plenty … and instead of what I do usually, just reinstall the system.

Solution! with a copy of Windows 8 and use the key on the bottom of the laptop … I figured it would be a great idea — because of Windows 8 — to use the built-in toshiba recovery image. But .. due to my dealings with those nasty things in the past, I first made a USB thumbdrive version too. Just to be sure.

Due to interesting mistake I was unable to recover Windows, but using Toshiba Recovery did secure erase the entire harddrive. Cause I was kinda hoping it would reinstall after that with factory image … but it didn’t, and that gives us the next chapter …

No Bootable device — please restart system

  • 0 … won’t bring me to the BIOS
  • F2 … doesn’t bring me to the BIOS
  • DEL … doesn’t bring me to the BIOS

And I really tried, a dozen times for each.

WTF?!

F12 … bootmenu has an option to enter the BIOS. Finally!

Troubleshoot: enabling legacy boot

  • Advanced -> System Configuration.
  • Boot Mode: UEFI boot

Greyed out

Reboot laptop again and same procedure again.

Solution: enabling legacy boot

  • Restart laptop
  • F12 for bootmenu, to enter the BIOS
  • First go to “Security”, and disable “Secure Boot”
  • Restart laptop
  • F12 for bootmenu, to enter the BIOS
  • then go the “Advanced” -> “System Configuration”, and chose “CSM boot” instead of “EUFI boot”
  • F10 to save settings

And it boots from CD!

Still cannot get it to boot from the created USB stick. But definitely happy with this!
